Inmate Mail Regulations | Men's Central Jail (MCJ) General Information
Men's Central Jail (MCJ) is the word's largest jail located in Downtown Los Angeles housing about 5,000 or more inmates. Its primary purpose is to provide security for sentenced and high security, pre-trial inmates.
Jail Marriages
Before a jail marriage can be performed at Men's Central the fiancée must fax a letter along with a copy of their driver license requesting permission to get married. Based on the results of a background check the unit commander will either approve or deny the request.
Once the request is approved the unit commander will contact the fiancée letting her know the marriage paperwork can be processed and when the marriage can be performed. The marriage is performed on a visiting day over the phone, there are no special provisions made for jail weddings. More information can be found here.
Inmate Notarizations
Notarizations are performed Monday - Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the attorney visiting area.
Men's Central is very strict about what paperwork they allow to be notarized. Marriage documents, including domestic partnerships, are only allowed to be notarized with pre-approval from the unit commander. The only documents allowed to be notarized without pre-approval are general powers of attorney. Financial and real estate documents are not allowed to be notarized.
If the inmate does not have identification then two witnesses with ID must be present at the time of the notarization to act as credible witnesses.
